webP4260073B2aWhat is the ClancyWorks Summer Dance Educators Training Institute?

We believe that outstanding teaching takes place when educators are passionate and engaged in their own artistic growth! With support from the Dana Foundation. The William G. Baker, Jr. Fund, and the Baltimore County Public School System, ClancyWorks Dance Company will host a week-long intensive professional development for artists teaching dance. The week is designed to enable participants to delve deeper into their artistic pursuits and to enhance their pedagogical techniques in a challenging and supportive environment.

Who is the Summer Institute Intended to Serve?

Sessions are open to the public, with a particular interest to serve choreographers and performers to highly experienced teaching artists, educators, and administrators with a range of experience. Participants from various arts and educational disciplines are invited and encouraged to attend the workshops.

What does the week's schedule look like?

Each day of the week will start with a technique class in a different style. The remainder of the day will offer workshops tailored to meet the needs of teaching artists and dance educators in a public school setting.

Workshop topics:

  • Improvisation/Partnering
  • Approaching Choreography from different angles: site specifically, technologically, to teach specific lessons, collaboratively, etc.
  • Teaching improvisation/composition/choreographing with the brain in mind
  • Building the healthy dancer: latest trends in dance science
  • Connecting dance to an academic curriculum
  • Use of popular culture in teaching dance to middle and high school students
  • State of the art video techniques/programs for the classroom
  • Documentary Impulse – how to easily incorporate everyday technology into the classroom and into your choreography
  • Developing an arts residency: Finding Funds for Guest Artists, Collaborating to Develop Class Plans, Creating a curriculum that achieves Maryland Essential Learning Outcomes and is individualized for different residencies
  • Classroom management skills, working in an urbanized environment with art tools as a way to manage classroom behavior. Necessary tools and methodologies needed for a dance educator in public schools
  • Differentiation in the dance classroom; from theory to practice
  • Infusing history and aesthetics in the classroom

Is it possible to receive college credit for participating in the Institute?

YES!!! Workshop Participants may receive 1 college credit for completion of the Dance Educators Training Insitute. Go to https://www.bcps.org/apps/registration/ to register for credit.

Workshop Fees:

Fee for the workshop is $350. Tuition will be waived for Baltimore County Public School Faculty Members and ClancyWorks' Teaching Artists.
